Who are DC's Deputy Mayors?

Often mentioned, but known by so few, DC Mayoral appointees, The Deputy Mayors of DC execute the city's plans as directed by the Mayor.

I thought it would be a good idea to track down these folk (I admit when I started I had no idea how many there are) and introduce them to the blissfully ignorant (myself included). I am making no comment on performance or politics (find another blog for that) just available info and links to their full bio's.

Victor Hopkins; Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development

Victor L. Hoskins is the District of Columbia’s Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, where he is responsible for implementing Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s vision for jobs and economic development. As Deputy Mayor, Hoskins heads the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), which is the District’s lead agency in coordinating policies and initiatives with respect to affordable housing, business attraction and retention, as well as workforce and economic development.

Beatriz Otero: Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services

Appointed Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services by District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray in February 2011, Beatriz “BB” Otero oversees ten health and human services city agencies responsible for the delivery of services to the district’s residents. Her office supports the Mayor in coordinating a comprehensive system of benefits, goods and services across multiple agencies to ensure that children, youth, and adults, with and without disabilities, can lead healthy, meaningful and productive lives. 

Abigail Smith; Deputy Mayor for Education

 "Ms. Smith was the Chief of Transformation Management for the DC Public Schools (DCPS). She has also served previously as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education and in several positions with Teach For America, including as the organization’s Vice President for Research and Public Policy and as the Teach For America Executive Director for the District. She began her education career as a first-grade teacher in Weldon, N.C."  The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) is responsible for developing and implementing the Mayor's vision for academic excellence and creating a high quality education continuum from birth to 24 (from early childhood to K-12 to post-secondary and the workforce).

The three major functions of the DME include:

• Overseeing a District-wide education strategy
• Managing inter-agency coordination
• Providing oversight and/or support for all education related agencies

Office of the State Superintendent for Education (OSSE)
Public Charter School Board (PCSB)
University of DC (UDC) & Community College of DC (CCDC)
DC Public Libraries (DCPL)

Paul A. Quander Jr; Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice

Paul A. Quander Jr. is a native Washingtonian and resident of Ward 7. He has spent nearly his entire career in the criminal justice sector, working to improve public safety in the District of Columbia. He has served in a variety of capacities, including serving as the presidentially appointed Director of Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency. As Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice he is responsible for the coordination and supervision of all District of Columbia public safety agencies. Which includes; MPD, FEMS, DOC and DCNG (the list is just to long to include here)

So these are the District of Columbia's Deputy Mayors - hopefully I haven't left anyone out. Incredibly smart, experienced and hardworking people who oversea most of the huge DC Government Bureaucracy.
